Towards the end of 1990, Dave went to Australia to meet two LCC cyclists who had returned there, and to do some cycling and sightseeing.

After encounters first with a mountain pass in Wales, and then with a ‘Col’ in the Pyrenees on the Bottom Bracket bike holiday, Dave had acquired a predilection for cycling uphill and, finding no proper mountains in England, decided to organise a two-week cycle-camping trip along the Pyrenees to Col du Tourmalet in August 1991. Travel would be on the Bike Train to Narbonne on the Mediterranean.

Dave sent out some invitations and John, Roger, and Martin and Maria on their tandem were coming, together with LCC cyclists Mike and Paul, on his recumbent bike to show that recumbents can go uphill. Geoff couldn’t go but sent his invitation to a friend who had gone to work in Munich. She couldn’t go but passed the invitation on to Bret, an American member of a local cycling group.
